Welcome to the Cameroon Bioethics Initiative (CAMBIN)

Who we are / mission statement

The Cameroon Bioethics Initiative (CAMBIN) has the objective of fostering the development of bioethics in Africa, with a particular focus on ethics in biomedical researchand strives for their achievement, particularly within the context of Cameroon. CAMBIN is a non-profit, non-governmental, non-political, non-discriminatory, multidisciplinary association, having French and English as its official languages. CAMBIN has a research ethics review and consultancy committee which does not only review protocols but offers consultancy services for biomedical research and ethical review of research in Cameroon and the Central African sub-region. With official seat in Yaoundé, CAMBIN was first constituted in May 2005 and officially legalized in June 2006.

What We Do (Our Objectives)
  • Providing a forum for regular meetings and discussion on bioethics.
  • Preserving and promoting African traditions in ethics and bioethics within the contemporary discourse of issues in bioethics.
  • Improving communication among research ethics committees (ECs) reviewing health research (including health, behavioural, and social science research) in Africa.
  • Fostering education in bioethics and training of Investigators and members of Ethics Review Committees (ERCs)/Institutional Review Boards (IRBs)
  • Promoting and assisting the development of regional, national, and institutional organizations of bioethics in Africa
  • Organizing international meetings and symposia on bioethics related topics
  • Reviewing research proposals for the purpose of research ethics clearance
  • Providing Consultancy service in bioethics and health research

 

Membership

The Cameroon Bioethics Initiative (CAMBIN) welcomes any individual or organization with an interest in ethical issues relating to human health and health research, to join and strengthen its activities

Existing members come from different walks of life and include medical doctors, nurses, lawyers, academics/researchers, ethicists, ethics committee members, students, journalists and many others, including, members of the public who are concerned with Bioethics related issues.

Membership is a means for individuals to network with peers, support an environment of collaboration and inclusive dialogue on bioethics issues, and advance the cause of bioethics in Cameroon and Africa in general.
